MaskOptix Eyeglasses: What Are DD Lenses?
What Are DD Lenses?
DD (Double D) lenses are a specialty dive mask lens design that includes:
-
A near-vision (reading) segment at the bottom
-
An additional near-vision segment at the top
-
A central area for distance vision
So instead of just one bifocal area, you effectively get two reading zones — one when you look down and one when you look up.
Why Would a Diver Need a Top and Bottom Bifocal?

In diving, your near-vision tasks don’t only happen below your line of sight.
Bottom Segment (Traditional Reading Area)
Used when:
-
Looking down at your gauges
-
Checking your dive computer on your wrist
-
Adjusting camera settings
-
Managing reels or lift bags
Top Segment (Unique Advantage)

Used when:
-
Looking up at a console clipped high on your chest
-
Viewing a heads-up display
-
Checking equipment mounted above your eye line
-
Working in tight overhead environments
For commercial and public safety divers especially, gear isn’t always positioned low and centered. The top bifocal allows near vision access without excessive head movement.
Benefits of DD Top & Bottom Bifocals
1. Reduced Head Movement
Instead of tilting your entire head, you simply shift your eyes.
2. Improved Ergonomics
Less neck strain during long dives or surface-supplied operations.
3. Better Task Efficiency
Quick visual transitions between:
-
Distance (environment, buddy, hazards)
-
Near tasks above and below your natural gaze
4. Enhanced Safety
Instant access to clear vision at multiple angles improves awareness and response time.
Who Benefits Most?

DD lenses with top and bottom bifocals are especially useful for:
-
Commercial divers
-
Public safety divers
-
Surface-supplied divers
-
Technical divers with complex setups
-
Divers using heads-up displays
Recreational divers may not always need the top segment, but for working divers, the functionality can be a major advantage.
How They Differ from Standard Double D (Corner) Lenses
Traditional Double D designs usually place small reading segments in the lower corners only.
Top-and-bottom DD lenses provide:
-
More versatile near vision access
-
Better functionality for non-traditional gear layouts
-
Greater adaptability in task-heavy diving environments
In short, DD lenses with bifocals on the top and bottom are built for divers who operate in dynamic environments where near vision isn’t limited to just looking down. They’re a performance-driven solution for serious diving applications.
